INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

Become an Approved Driving Instructor with A1 NATIONAL

The qualifying examination to become a driving instructor is in three parts.

Part One: The theory test

Part Two: The driving test

Part Three: The test of your ability to give instruction

Part One: The Theory Test

The first part of the test consists of a series of 100 questions on a computer screen. Each question has a set of four multiple choice answers with one or more correct answers included. You are allowed 90 minutes to complete the test. You must achieve a pass mark of 85%.The second part of the test is a hazard perception test. This consists of 14 video clips containing normal driving scenes, in which you have to click on various hazards that appear. A pass mark of 57 out of a possible 75 is required on this section of the test. The training that we will provide you with to complete your Part One is as follows:

We provide seven publications:

• The Highway Code

• Driving Instructors Handbook

• Driving The Essential Skills

• Know Your Traffic Signs

• The Official Theory Test

• The Official Driving Test

• CD-ROM Theory/Hazard perception training

The school will supply your mock test papers that can be completed with the aid of the books supplied by us. Once completed, we will mark them, indicate any incorrect answers and supply you with the correct answers as well as further training papers. To assist your training further we may ask you from time to time to complete some mock test papers without any study aids at our training centre. This will enable us to assess if you are ready to take your part one test. The school will provide you with any back up needed and welcomes any queries you may have.

Part Two: The driving test

This is the practical part of the test, which begins with an eyesight test where you will be asked to read a standard number plate at a distance of 27.5 metres (90 feet). Your practical test will then take place during which you will be asked to show the examiner that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety in practice. As part of this test you will be asked to carry out an emergency stop. You will also be required to carry out all of the following low speed manoeuvres on the test:

• Turn in the road

• Reverse into a road on the left

• Reverse into a road on the right

• Reverse parking either into a parking bay or behind a parked car

The test will last for approximately one hour and the routes will include all types of roads including dual carriageway and motorways. The training we will provide you with to complete your part two is as follows:

You will receive up to 20 hours practical training for this part of your course with an experienced fully qualified driving instructor.

You will drive all the major test routes used in your final examination, whilst being instructed in the correct use of the driving system expected on your test.

You will then be able to discuss any issues that you have at the end of the session to take forward to your future driving lessons.

Part Three: The test of your ability to give instruction

The object of this test is to assess the value of the instruction you give and your ability to pass this knowledge onto the pupil. The test is in two parts and takes place in car, each of which lasts approximately half an hour. You will be asked to show your knowledge and ability by giving practical driving instruction to the examiner, who poses in the first part of the test as a learner with limited knowledge, and in the second part as a pupil who is at test standard.

The training we will provide you with to complete your part three is as follows:

• Visual Aids

• Manuals

• All briefings

• Prepared drawings

• A full set of cue cards

This part of the course will also be completed as 40 hours in car training. You will be taught how to brief and instruct both a partly trained pupil and then a pupil who is at test standard. This course will include each and every subject that could be used by your examiner on the day of the test. It will also be possible for you to sit in on an actual driving lesson being given to a pupil by a qualified driving instructor.

The course fees

The total cost of training is currently £1850.00* with a non-refundable deposit of £500.00 required in all cases. You have the option to pay the full amount up front or pay for each stage of training as you proceed through the course. The course fees are broken down for each stage as follows:
